Seventh Day of Christmas

Seventh Day of Christmas: Swans

Seventh Day of Christmas

A Poem for the Seventh Day of Christmas

A swan is a study
in contradictions

The embodiment of grace,
gliding along the surface
in summer
at sunset. Ache.

The epitome of hostile aggression,
serrated beaks snapping
at hapless passers-by. Ack.

So it is with we human creatures,
created and redeemed

We snap
we glide
we honk
we soar

Seven sins, seven virtues.
Which do you want to focus on?

For the Twelve Days of Christmas, I’m making cut paper art. At least until multiplication gets the better of me.

The Nativity of Our Lord: Christmas Day (BCP, Public Domain)

Almighty God, you have given your only-begotten Son to take our nature upon him, and to be born of a pure virgin: Grant that we, who have been born again and made your children by adoption and grace, may daily be renewed by your Holy Spirit; through our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom with you and the same Spirit be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

The Magicians by Lev Grossman

Sure, you’ve seen the show: sexy magicians being sexy. You’re gearing up for Season 3. But have you read the books? Same thing but funnier. Like, hilariously funny. Highly recommended. (The connection, by the way, is geese and swans—which at some point figure prominently. Sorry, this is how my brain works.
